Description: The Crochet Beginner Intensive is lead by Jake Kenyon of Kenyarn, LLC and is hosted by Skein Yarn Shop in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. This course is ideal for those who are just starting their journey with crochet and no previous experience crocheting is necessary. In this course, Jake will lead you from learning to hold your tools, to reading patterns, to applying your skills to bring to life a cotton dishcloth, a beautiful shawl, and your very first granny square. Participants in the course are expected to provide their own materials that can be purchased from Skein Yarn Shop with a discount of 15% off class materials. Participants are expected to practice their crocheting between courses and to arrive to class with progress on their projects! This course is designed only for students 16+ years old.
Schedule:
Week 1: Introduction to Crocheting: Holding your tools, orientation to a new yarn craft. In the first week of this course we will learn to hold the yarn and the hook and begin practicing these elements using a simple, cotton dishcloth pattern provided by the instructor. In this week we will discuss single, half double, and double crochet stitches.
Weeks 2/3: Finishing our Dishcloth & Reading Patterns: Using the Bramble Scarf Pattern, we will review how crochet patterns are written and begin to understand how simple stitching can be used to create a beautiful and wearable flat scarf. The Bramble Scarf features foundational learning for Granny Squares as well, something we will tackle in Week 4 of this course. Week 3 is an opportunity to work together on our projects, ask more questions, troubleshoot, and solidify your new foundation of knowledge. We will finish our Bramble Scarf in Week 3.
Week 4: Crocheting in the Round: With your new foundational skills, we will learn how to set up for crocheting in the round, and explore the use of double crochet stitches to create a simple granny square, with the option to use this pattern for a large granny square scrap blanket.
